Frequently asked questions
What types of issues does Elite Psychology Group specialize in?
We work with a wide range of concerns, including anxiety and panic attacks, depression, trauma and PTSD, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, disordered eating and body image, grief and loss, life transitions, men's issues, women's issues, and relationship challenges. We also offer specialized services in couples therapy, child and adolescent therapy, parenting and co-parenting support, sport psychology, and business performance coaching.
What happens in a first therapy session?
The goal for our first couple of meetings is to get to know you and make you feel comfortable in meeting. During our first meeting, we’ll talk about what brings you in to the office, and we’ll gather background information that will help us as we work together to help you reach your goals. We’ll also discuss and develop a personalized plan for you to follow so you can reach your goals for therapy. The initial session is 60 minutes long, and subsequent sessions are 45 minutes in length.
Do you accept insurance for therapy in Los Angeles & Atlanta?
Yes! In California, we are in-network with Anthem Blue Cross and Aetna. We handle billing from start to finish, including letting you know your copayment amount — so you can focus on your care, not the paperwork. In Georgia, our practice is currently fee-for-service, providing out of network billing support with payment due at the time of service. We provide a monthly superbill that you can submit to your insurance carrier if your plan includes out-of-network benefits (typically available with PPO plans).
How do I find the right therapist for anxiety in Los Angeles & Atlanta?
Finding the right therapist starts with identifying what you're looking for — someone who specializes in your specific concerns, uses evidence-based methods, and feels like a genuine fit. At Elite Psychology Group, our therapists specialize in anxiety and panic attacks using approaches like CBT and mindfulness, and we offer a free 15-minute consultation so you can get a sense of the relationship before committing. We serve clients throughout Los Angeles & Atlanta in person and anywhere in California via telehealth.
How long does therapy typically take?
It depends on what you are coming in the office for but for fairly straightforward issues, therapy sessions may range from 12 weeks to 6 months. For more complex and longstanding problems or challenges, you may have to dedicate more time to therapy, possibly up to a year or more. Another important factor that can contribute to the length of therapy is your motivation. Research has shown that the more motivated a person is to change, get help, and reach your goals, the more likely you are to have positive therapy outcomes and the faster you can reach these positive outcomes. Likewise, if you are not very motivated or willing to do the work, then the therapy process can drag on or end too soon, causing your symptoms to remain the same or maybe even get worse with time. It is important to make an effort and commitment to therapy.
What therapy approaches do you use?
Our therapists use evidence-based methods tailored to each client's needs. These include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based CBT, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and family systems approaches.
How do I get started with therapy at Elite Psychology Group?
You can book a consultation directly online at elitepsychologygroup.com, or call us at 310-592-9910. We offer a free 15-minute consultation so you can ask questions and find the right fit before committing to a full session.
What should I look for in a psychologist in Los Angeles & Atlanta?
Look for board certification, specialized training in evidence-based therapies, and experience treating your specific concerns. Board-certified clinical psychologists (ABPP) have met the highest standards in the field — fewer than 4% of psychologists in the U.S. hold this credential. At Elite Psychology Group, our founder Dr. Todd Adamson is board-certified and a Diplomate in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and our full team brings that same commitment to clinical excellence.
Do you work with individuals, couples, children, and families?
Yes. We provide therapy for individuals of all ages, couples, children and adolescents, families, and parents. We also offer coaching for athletes and business professionals seeking peak performance.
How do I know if therapy is working?
Progress in therapy isn't always linear, but meaningful signs include feeling more aware of your thoughts and patterns, handling situations that used to overwhelm you with more ease, and noticing shifts in your relationships or daily functioning. Your therapist will check in regularly on how things are feeling and adjust the approach if needed. If you're ever unsure, it's always okay to bring it up directly — good therapists welcome that conversation.
What's the difference between a psychologist and a therapist?
In the U.S., psychologists hold a doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) and are licensed to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions. The term "therapist" is broader and can refer to licensed clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, or licensed professional counselors — all of whom provide valuable care but with different training backgrounds. At Elite Psychology Group, our team includes both doctoral-level psychologists and licensed therapists, so we can match you with the right provider for your needs.
What are your credentials?
Elite Psychology Group was founded by Dr. Todd Adamson, PsyD, ABPP — a board-certified clinical psychologist and one of fewer than 4% of psychologists in the U.S. to hold board certification. He is also a Diplomate of the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies. Our team includes licensed psychologists and marriage and family therapists, collectively bringing over 25 years of clinical experience.
What if I've never been to therapy before?
That's more common than you might think, and there's no prior experience required. Many people feel nervous before a first session and find that the reality is much more approachable than they expected. Therapy at Elite Psychology Group is practical and goal-oriented — you won't just be asked how things make you feel. You'll come away with tools, frameworks, and strategies you can actually use.
Is everything I share in therapy confidential?
Yes. Therapists are bound by strict confidentiality laws, including HIPAA. What you share in sessions stays between you and your therapist. There are a small number of legal exceptions — such as if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others — which your therapist will explain at the start of treatment. Otherwise, your privacy is fully protected.
Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
Research consistently shows that telehealth therapy can be just as effective as in-person sessions for most concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship issues. We offer secure video and phone sessions for clients throughout California and Georgia, with the same evidence-based approaches used in our offices.
Do I need to do anything before coming in to see you?
Once you have scheduled an initial meeting with me, I will email you the necessary forms that you can download, read, complete, and bring to the first session.
Do you offer in-person therapy, telehealth, or both?
We offer both. In-person sessions are available at our Los Angeles office (11340 W. Olympic Blvd., Suite 385) and our Atlanta-area location (1123 Clairmont Rd, Decatur, GA). Telehealth sessions are available via secure video or phone for clients throughout California and Georgia.
