How to Use Your Blue Shield of California Benefits for Therapy Before the Year Ends

If you have Blue Shield of California and you've been meaning to start therapy, the next ten weeks may be the best window you'll get all year.

‍

Most health plans run on a calendar year. On January 1, deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums typically reset to zero. If you've already paid toward them in 2026, every session you start before then can cost you less than the same session in January.

‍

At Elite Psychology Group, we're in-network with Blue Shield of California. Here's what your plan likely covers, how to check in about ten minutes, and why fall is a smart time to begin.

Does Blue Shield of California cover therapy?

Yes. Blue Shield plans cover outpatient mental health care, including individual therapy, couples and family therapy, and psychological testing when it's medically necessary.

‍

California law backs this up. Since January 1, 2021, a state law known as SB 855 has required commercial health plans to cover medically necessary treatment for all mental health and substance use conditions listed in the DSM-5 or ICD-10, under the same terms as physical health care. Before that, state parity rules applied to only nine serious mental illnesses.

‍

In practical terms, anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, grief, and relationship-related distress are all conditions your plan must treat on equal footing with a medical diagnosis.

‍

What varies is your cost. Depending on your plan, you may pay:

  • A flat copay per session (common on HMO and many PPO plans)
  • Coinsurance, a percentage of the allowed rate, often after your deductible
  • Nothing extra, if you've already reached your out-of-pocket maximum for the year

On many Blue Shield plans, routine outpatient mental health visits are not subject to the deductible at all. You'd pay only your copay from the first session.

Why October through December is the smartest time to start

1. You may have already met your deductible. Doctor visits, labs, or a procedure earlier this year all count toward it. If it's met, your share of each therapy session drops now and resets in January.

2. You may be close to your out-of-pocket maximum. Once you hit it, covered in-network care is typically paid in full for the rest of the plan year.

3. Some plans offer a fourth-quarter carryover. Certain Blue Shield plans credit deductible amounts paid in October through December toward next year's deductible. Check your plan documents for this.

4. Your plan may change on January 1. Blue Shield has already sent 2027 renewal notices, and many show deductible or out-of-pocket changes. If your employer is switching carriers, coverage you have today may not exist next year.

5. The holidays are hard. Family dynamics, grief, financial pressure, and shorter days all peak in winter. Starting before the season gives you support while it's happening, not after.

6. Therapy isn't a quick fix. The first sessions build assessment, rapport, and a plan. Starting now means you walk into the new year with momentum instead of a waiting list.

How to check your Blue Shield mental health benefits

  1. Find your member ID card. It lists your plan type (HMO, PPO, EPO) and a member services number.
  2. Log in to your Blue Shield account online or in the app. Look for "Benefits" or "Plan details," then the mental health or behavioral health section.
  3. Look up three numbers: your outpatient mental health copay or coinsurance, your deductible and how much you've met, and your out-of-pocket maximum and how much you've met.
  4. Ask whether outpatient therapy is subject to the deductible. On many plans it isn't.
  5. Confirm whether you need a referral or pre-authorization. Most PPO plans don't require one for outpatient therapy; some HMO plans do. Behavioral health may be managed by a separate administrator, so use the number on your card.
  6. Confirm your therapist is in-network. Out-of-network providers can bill above Blue Shield's allowed amount, and those costs may not count toward your limits.

What you can use your benefits for

Our Los Angeles therapists use evidence-based approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), to help with:

  • Anxiety, panic, and chronic stress
  • Depression and low motivation
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Grief and loss, which often surface during the holidays
  • Relationship and family conflict
  • Life transitions: career changes, divorce, new parenthood, retirement
  • Performance pressure for executives, athletes, and high achievers
  • Psychological assessment when you want clarity on ADHD, learning, or mood concerns

You don't need a crisis to start. Many clients come in because something feels off and they want a plan before it gets worse.

Frequently asked questions

Does Blue Shield of California cover therapy? Yes. Blue Shield covers medically necessary outpatient mental health care, including individual, couples, and family therapy. Your cost depends on your plan's copay, coinsurance, and deductible.

Do I need a referral to see a therapist with Blue Shield? Most PPO plans don't require one for outpatient therapy. Some HMO plans do. Call the member services number on your card to confirm.

Is therapy subject to my deductible? It depends on the plan. Many Blue Shield plans exempt routine outpatient mental health visits from the deductible, so you pay only a copay.

When does my Blue Shield deductible reset? Most plans reset on January 1. Some employer plans run on a different plan year, so check your plan documents.

How many therapy sessions does Blue Shield cover? California law bars plans from capping mental health care differently than medical care. Sessions are covered as long as treatment remains medically necessary.

Can I do therapy online with Blue Shield? Most Blue Shield plans cover telehealth therapy for California residents. Confirm your plan's telehealth benefit before booking.
